Coinbase is preparing to launch prediction markets and tokenized stock trading as early as next week, marking one of the exchange’s most ambitious product expansions to date, according to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter.

The move comes as the company formally joined the Coalition for Prediction Markets (CPM), a group founded by Kalshi and Crypto.com to advocate for long-term regulatory access to event-based trading in the United States.

“Our mission at Coinbase is to expand financial freedom globally, and prediction markets naturally democratize fact-finding and the pursuit of truth,” said Faryar Shirzad, Coinbase’s Chief Policy Officer, emphasizing the CPM’s goal to work closely with policymakers.

The Prediction Market Boom

Prediction platforms have surged in popularity throughout 2024. Kalshi — founded in 2018 by MIT graduates Tarek Mansour and Luana Lopes Lara — has become one of the sector’s leading operators, alongside Polymarket and Opinion. Weekly trading volumes hover near $1 billion, according to Dune Analytics.

Last week, total sector volumes reportedly hit a record $4 billion, although some analysts question the accuracy of those figures. Still, momentum is undeniable.

What Coinbase Plans to Launch

The upcoming product suite is expected to include:

  • Prediction markets on real-world events
  • Tokenized stock trading, allowing users to access equity-like instruments on-chain
  • Integration with Coinbase’s existing regulatory framework, offering a more compliant path for U.S. users

For Coinbase, the combination of its large user base, established licensing footprint, and brand trust could accelerate mainstream adoption of both prediction markets and tokenized equities.

Why It Matters

The launch signals another step toward the merging of traditional and crypto-native markets. Tokenized financial instruments continue gaining institutional interest, while prediction markets have entered a breakout phase — offering unique, on-chain trading exposure tied to real-world outcomes.

If successful, Coinbase’s entry could reshape access to these markets for millions of U.S. users.
